Halloween on 31 October and Diwali on 8 November sit eight days apart this year. How to plan both without exhausting your guests, your budget or yourself.
This year the calendar is generous and demanding in equal measure. Halloween fell on 31 October, ORNATE hosted Night of Shadows 2.0 on 1 November, and Diwali arrives on 8 November. For anyone hosting, that is two very different celebrations inside a single fortnight, and the temptation is to treat them as one long party.
Treat Halloween and Diwali as opposite moods. Halloween is dark, late and costume-led; Diwali is warm, family-led and bright. Reuse the logistics, such as venue, vendors and guest handling, but change the lighting, food, dress and timing entirely, and leave a few days between them to reset.
What carries over, and what must change?
The practical machinery of hosting, such as the venue, the guest list, the sound and the catering contacts, transfers directly. The atmosphere does not. A room that works for a masked late-night party will feel wrong for a family puja unless it is changed completely.
| Element | Halloween | Diwali |
|---|---|---|
| Lighting | Low, coloured, moody | Warm, bright, many small lights |
| Dress | Costumes, masks | Festive wear, often traditional |
| Food | Cocktail-led, lighter service | A full family meal and sweets |
| Timing | Late, evening into night | Earlier, around puja |
| Mood | Playful and dramatic | Warm and family-first |

How do you avoid burning out?
- Give the first event's team a rest day before starting the second.
- Do not reuse décor between them, even when it would save money.
- Plan Diwali food and gifting early, since those suppliers book up.
- Decide in advance what to cut if the budget stretches.
