Diwali Décor for Hosts: Diyas, Rangoli, Marigold and Light

The Ornate Team · 2 November 2026 · 3 min read

How to decorate for Diwali: where to place diyas, how to plan a rangoli, how to use marigold and how much light is enough, with safety notes for open flames.

Diwali décor is the opposite of Halloween's. Where one is built on shadow, the other is built on light. Done with restraint, a handful of diyas, a marigold garland and a rangoli can transform a doorway, and a room that looks warm in lamplight needs surprisingly little else.

The short answer

Decorate for Diwali by layering warm light: diyas along thresholds and ledges, a rangoli at the entrance, marigold garlands at doors, and string lights for background glow. Keep the palette warm and the arrangement simple, place open flames away from fabric and curtains, and favour a few well-placed pieces over a crowded room.

What is the idea behind Diwali lighting?

Diwali is the festival of lights, and the lamps are central to it: they are lit to welcome Lakshmi into the home and mark the victory of light over darkness. That gives décor a clear logic. The goal is not a showy display but a sense of warmth and welcome, starting at the front door.

How do you make a rangoli?

Rangoli is a floor design made with coloured powder, rice or flower petals. A simple geometric pattern, drawn from the centre outwards, is easier and often looks cleaner than something ornate. Flower petals make a good no-mess alternative, and marking the outline with chalk first makes the colouring far easier.

Start simple

A circle with a repeated petal pattern around it is enough. If it is your first time, resist the temptation to fill the whole entrance.

Work from the centre out

It keeps your hands off finished areas and makes symmetry easier to hold.

How do you use marigold well?

Marigold garlands across the doorframe, loose petals in a bowl of water or scattered around a diya, and a string along a banister are all inexpensive and effective. The orange and yellow suit warm lamplight, and the scent adds more than most decorations can.

What about safety?

  • Place diyas on stable surfaces, away from fabric and curtains.
  • Keep children and pets in mind when choosing heights.
  • Never leave open flames unattended.
  • Consider LED lamps for crowded or indoor areas.
  • Keep a bucket of water nearby when lighting many lamps outdoors.

Frequently asked questions

What flowers suit Diwali décor?

Marigold is the traditional choice. It is affordable and lasts well.

Is a rangoli difficult?

A simple geometric pattern is easy. Flower petals are a quick alternative.

Are LED lamps acceptable?

Yes, especially in crowded or indoor settings where open flames are a risk.

Where should the rangoli go?

At the entrance, so it is the first thing guests see.
