Govardhan Puja and Annakut: The Day After Diwali Explained

The Ornate Team · 4 November 2026 · 2 min read

What Govardhan Puja and Annakut mean, when they fall in 2026 and how families mark the day with a mountain of food and a shared meal.

The day after Diwali is quieter than the night before, and it has its own meaning. Govardhan Puja is the fourth day of the festival, tied to a story of devotion, of a storm and of an entire community sheltering under a hill. It is also, for many families, a day of one very large meal.

The short answer

Govardhan Puja commemorates the story of Krishna lifting Govardhan Hill to shelter villagers from storm. Annakut, meaning a mountain of food, is the offering made that day. In 2026 most calendars place it on Monday 9 November, though a few shift it by a day, so check a local panchang.

What is the story behind Govardhan Puja?

In the tradition, Krishna persuaded the people of Braj to honour Govardhan Hill, which sustained their cattle and their fields, instead of worshipping Indra. Indra responded with a deluge, and Krishna lifted the hill on his finger to shelter everyone beneath it until the storm passed. The festival remembers that sheltering, and the humility of the king of the gods being shown his place.

What is Annakut?

Annakut means a heap or mountain of food. A large and varied offering is arranged, often in a mound that suggests the hill itself, and is presented to the deity. Afterwards the food is shared as prasad. For families, it usually turns into a long and convivial meal, with many dishes on the table.

How do families mark the day?

  • A morning puja, often with an arrangement of food or a small hill made of cow dung or clay in some households.
  • A family lunch as the main meal of the day.
  • Visits to relatives and neighbours.
  • A slower pace than Diwali night, since many people are tired.
